Mark E. Gibbons

Mark E. Gibbons, NRP

Mark E. Gibbons is a former Maryland State Trooper with more than four decades of experience in public safety. He retired in 2012 at the rank of Major, with his final command being the Maryland State Police Aviation Command. During his career, he served in field operations, special operations, aviation, and training. His public-safety background also includes service as a firefighter, paramedic, flight paramedic, and SWAT team member.

Since 1986, Mark has advocated for both tactical medical support in special operations and practical "street smarts" for responders. He chaired a national committee for the National Tactical Officers Association that developed tactical medical guidance which helped shape what is now recognized as national guidance in the field. He is also an original member of the C-TECC Guidelines Committee.

He has taught first responders and corporate teams in the United States and internationally, contributed to numerous professional publications, and currently provides executive medical support to a major global corporation. Mark is also co-founder of Streetwise EMS, an organization focused on helping EMS providers better recognize, prevent, and respond to violence in the field. Among his professional honors, Mark is a recipient of the FBI Shield of Bravery.

Kevin B. Gerold

Dr. Kevin B. Gerold

Medical Advisor, Streetwise

Dr. Kevin Gerold is a Clinical Professor in Anesthesiology at the University of Maryland. After completing his residency and fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Maryland, he joined the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2002, where he was promoted to Associate Professor and served as Clinical Director of the Burn Center and Surgical ICU at Bayview Medical Center.

A nationally recognized leader in Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS), Dr. Gerold helped establish the Tactical Medical Unit within the Maryland State Police and served as its Program Medical Director and Tactical Physician for many years. He has also served as a Special Deputy United States Marshal and Senior Medical Officer with the Johns Hopkins Center for Law Enforcement Medicine, and as Chair of the Tactical Emergency Medical Support Section of the National Tactical Officers Association.

Dr. Gerold brings decades of medical expertise, operational experience, and a commitment to education to Streetwise, supporting its mission to help Fire and EMS professionals recognize evolving threats, make informed decisions, and provide effective medical care safely.

Jake Nyhart

Jake Nyhart

Tactical Advisor & Instructor, Streetwise

Jake Nyhart is a retired Lieutenant with the City of St. Petersburg, Florida, with more than 35 years of experience as a career firefighter and paramedic. Throughout his career, Jake served in a variety of specialized first-response roles, including Flight Paramedic and Tactical Emergency Medical Services (TEMS) provider.

Jake spent 20 years as a TEMS provider, including his final seven years leading the TEMS team, supporting local, state, and federal law enforcement operations during civil disturbances, domestic violence incidents, behavioral-health related calls, and other high-risk events, including multiple incidents involving the use of deadly force.

As a Rescue Lieutenant, Jake was responsible for the daily operational readiness of Advanced Life Support (ALS) response units, coordinating escalated EMS and fire responses, and conducting post-incident quality reviews, giving him a unique perspective developed through decades of frontline emergency response, tactical medicine, leadership, and interagency operations.

Joshua Blair

Joshua Blair, MA

Victim Services Advisor, Streetwise

Joshua Blair is a public service professional with a background in forensic psychology, victim and witness services, and working with individuals navigating high-stress and challenging circumstances. He currently serves as a Relocation Specialist with the Office of the State's Attorney for Baltimore City, where he works directly with victims and witnesses who face threats or safety concerns related to their involvement in criminal cases. In this role, Joshua helps individuals and families relocate to safe environments and coordinates resources to support their safety during difficult and potentially volatile situations.

Joshua holds a Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology from The George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from North Carolina State University. His professional experience has included supporting justice-involved individuals and vulnerable young adults. Across his career, he has developed a strong understanding of communication, human behavior, and risk awareness.

Joshua brings this perspective to Streetwise, contributing a behavioral and victim-centered lens to the conversation around violence prevention and responder safety. His experience offers insight into how people respond to threatening situations, how communication can influence outcomes, and why awareness and preparation matter before, during, and after a critical incident.

Ted Newton

Ted Newton

Ted Newton is co-founder of Streetwise. Over more than two decades in med-tech, including years as U.S. Sales Leader at Philips Healthcare and now as a private strategic advisor and board member, Ted has built his career partnering directly with EMS agencies to get life-saving technology into the field, with experience spanning many specialties. That work put him alongside EMS and Fire crews for years and left him with a deep respect for the job and the risks it carries.

A longtime colleague and friend of Mark Gibbons, Ted co-founded Streetwise to bring that same partnership mindset to EMS safety, building practical, field-grounded training that helps every responder get home safely at the end of their shift.
